“The car of the future cannot be built with the processes and tools from the past”

VÉLIZY-VILLACOUBLAY, France – February 10, 2011 – Dassault Systèmes (Euronext Paris: #13065, DSY.PA), a world leader in 3D and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions, announced today that BMW has selected its V6 PLM solutions to develop the future electrical, electronics, and embedded software (E/E) architecture of BMW cars.

BMW chose Dassault Systèmes’ V6 solution for thousands of engineers because of its flexible PLM backbone, and the large degree of out-of-the-box, specialized functionality for systems engineering.

With the Architecture, Integration and Design for Automotive Project (AIDA), BMW will implement a seamless collaborative process to connect the various constituents and actors of the E/E process, putting BMW’s customers’ values at the center of the innovation process. By leveraging Dassault Systèmes’ V6 to create a single IP reference, BMW will link customer requirements to implementable functions in the car, while defining the logical architecture of the systems and releasing the physical expression in form of hardware and software.

BMW will leverage the V6 solution to manage the future complexity of embedded systems in the car by providing a master architecture for all car derivations and enabling a constant modernization of car functions. The re-use of functions and the separation of hardware and software components in the development process will help BMW gain significant cost savings in the E/E domain.

The V6 PLM systems design solution will be connected to the current BMW enterprise environment, demonstrating the openness of the V6 platform. This successful deployment, already in operation today, is the first step in a 10-year partnership that BMW and Dassault Systèmes have signed to build the best infrastructure and applications for the E/E domain.

“The car of the future cannot be built with the processes and tools from the past” comments Dominique Florack, Senior Executive Vice President, Products – R&D at Dassault Systèmes. “The V6 platform is the Dassault Systèmes strategic solution to create and simulate digitally the most complex embedded systems. I am delighted to see that BMW has endorsed our vision and was able to deploy V6 in production, on time, less than eight months after its decision.”

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., February 24, 2011 – Dassault Systèmes (Euronext Paris: #13065, DSY.PA), a world leader in 3D and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions, today announced that Lockheed Martin has migrated its F-35 Lightning II robotic painting workcells to Dassault Systèmes’ DELMIA Robotics. A long-time user of DELMIA manufacturing simulation solutions, Lockheed Martin’s new implementation of DELMIA Robotics has made the company’s manufacturing processes more efficient, leveraging a common interface across its CATIA design authoring and DELMIA digital manufacturing solutions.

Lockheed Martin uses simulations to verify that the robots will reach all the painting positions while avoiding any collisions. Automating the paint and coatings process provides significant time savings, as well as better process control. Additionally, protecting workers from potentially harmful paint fumes is an added benefit of robots. The company had already experienced success with the previous generation of DELMIA Robotics simulation.

Since they are already familiar with the CATIA interface, Lockheed Martin NC programmers easily move into robot support roles, pick up the software and produce programs.

Lockheed Martin currently employs the robotic solution in two different automated paint cells, both configured on moving rail systems. A three-robot cell is dedicated to painting the aircraft exterior and a two-robot cell is configured to handle a variety of F-35 components. Both the physical cell and the robot programming have been designed for flexibility through optimization and verification of the programs in the virtual DELMIA environment so that the company can paint different mixes of components at different times.

Enhancements within the DELMIA Cenit FASTSURF solution make it easier to modify existing robot programs for significant time gains. Previous solutions required extensive rework any time a component design changed. Now with FASTSURF, adapting to a part change can be as simple as plugging a new parameter in the setup strategy. Additionally, this solution allows Lockheed Martin to monitor the thickness of coatings—a critical factor in ensuring that aircraft meet design requirements—through a query option at any point in the application.

“Working with a visionary company such as Lockheed Martin has allowed Cenit to verify the value of our FASTSURF solution,” stated Cenit account manager, Niall Cullen. “Their in-depth experience in Robotic OLP was key in shaping a production-hardened solution with aerospace accuracy.”

“Lockheed Martin was quick to understand the benefits to be gained by having all engineers working with the same user interface paradigm across CATIA and DELMIA solutions,” said Steve Milliren, executive account manager, aerospace industry, DELMIA, Dassault Systèmes. “With the DELMIA Robotics solution, there is a common structure for easy communication and elimination of data translations for improved data integrity.”

In addition to the DELMIA Robotics solution, Lockheed Martin also uses Dassault Systemes Virtual Ergonomics and DPM Assembly solutions.

WOKING SURREY, UK and VÉLIZY-VILLACOUBLAY, France, March 1st, 2011 – McLaren Racing, the operating arm of the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 team, and Dassault Systèmes (Euronext Paris: #13065, DSY.PA), a world leader in 3D and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions, are pleased to announce a new partnership to further enhance racing car development efficiency.

The agreement sees McLaren Racing committing to Dassault Systèmes’ open V6 PLM solutions for integrated design development, analysis and management. ENOVIA V6 forms McLaren Racing’s collaborative innovation backbone by providing a single IP reference for managing engineering, intellectual property and business processes. CATIA V6 will be used for innovative design and concurrent engineering, enhancing McLaren’s development efficiency.

The deployment of Dassault Systèmes’ V6 solutions enables McLaren Racing’s team to benefit from one of the most sophisticated, open, flexible, secure and integrated PLM 2.0 software environments ever created. The scale, scope and speed of Formula 1 racing design means tens of thousands of new innovative designs and ideas each year. Creating, developing and testing so many designs requires an efficient and trusted software environment to integrate and safely manage the considerable load of technical data and engineering simulation results. Dassault Systèmes’ V6 collaborative PLM solutions will play a vital role in helping streamline McLaren Racing’s processes, as well as promoting successful innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration from the initial concept to manufacturing and then to the racetrack itself.

“While it may look straightforward to guide a racing car from a 3D digital model to the racetrack, it’s a process that involves an extraordinarily complex and disparate series of interlocking design, purchasing and manufacturing constituents. At McLaren Racing, we are looking at every opportunity to cut our time to market – whether that’s through clever design, the introduction of improved processes or, in the case of V6 PLM, by introducing a sophisticated product lifecycle management system to improve efficiency throughout the production cycle,” said Jonathan Neale, McLaren Racing’s managing director. “Dassault Systèmes’ suite of software solutions has long been part of McLaren’s design DNA, and the introduction of CATIA V6 and ENOVIA V6 will only strengthen our hand, allowing us to work faster and more productively within one of the most competitive and relentless environments in the world.”

Dassault Systèmes CEO Bernard Charles commented, “By signing this important agreement with Vodafone McLaren Mercedes we are building a stronger partnership with a great Formula 1 team. This new collaboration demonstrates Formula 1’s world commitment to innovation. A formidable test bed for extreme reliable technologies that only Dassault Systèmes PLM 2.0 can provide. We wish Vodafone McLaren Mercedes the very best for the current race season and are proud of our involvement with such a prestigious and successful team”.
