Local product life-cycle management (PLM) specialist CNC Design Consultants (CDC) has teamed up with vehicle producer Optimal Energy in the design of the first South African electrical car, the Joule. The plug-in electric vehicle was conceived by Optimal Energy and has been refined by automotive and design company Zagato’s Total Design Centre. “CDC is working closely with Optimal Energy to ensure a quality design,” says CDC MD Igal Filipovski. The car will reportedly go into production in 2013 and is on display this month at the Geneva Motor Show, in Switzerland.

Advanced Material Technologies Magazine – CATIA V6
Red Hot Manufacturing Software!
CDC’s Managing Director, Igal Filipovski, and Advanced Material Technologies Magazine recently discussed the release of CATIA V6 and what this could mean for the relationship between South African manufacturers and OEM’s. CATIA V6 was developed in response to continuous pressure from OEM’s to shorten time to market and reduce costs. South Africa’s very own electric vehicle manufacturer, Optimal Energy, will use the system to enter into production of it’s much-talked-about Joule.

Automotive and Aerospace Tooling Seminar 2005
On 8 September 2005, at the Automotive Supplier Park Conference Centre in Rosslyn, CDC and IBM held yet another successful CATIA Tooling Seminar. The theme of this year’s event was ‘Innovate with CATIA’, and it addressed not only the automotive industry but also the growing field of aerospace. This was a direct result of recent developments that have created significant new opportunities for local tool suppliers.
During the course of the event, two extremely significant video clips were shown, featuring interviews with top-level executives from two world-renowned companies – Airbus Industri, and McLaren F1 Construction. Both these companies were forced to review their choice of CAD/CAM facility, both carried out exhaustive and intense benchmarks – and both ended up choosing Catia to replace their then-existing systems.
